Field Trip is a series of community-led walking tours in Marrickville and Sydenham. We are learning about the area’s industrial, infrastructural and creative spaces, as well as engaging people in a conversation about the future of the neighbourhood.

Because this is a knowledge sharing project as well as a series of events, we are organising relevant documents here on the Frontyard wiki. Please feel free to add and comment to what we have started here.

We organised an event as part of the Inner West Open Studio Trail on March 18, 2018, to explore community visions for Marrickville 2028. Geographer Craig Lyons spoke about the [https://opus.lib.uts.edu.au/handle/10453/116643 audit of cluster dynamics on Carrington Road.] Local historian [http://ianhoskins.com/ Ian Hoskins] was the guest speaker from Save Marrickville Action Group. Field Trip is supported by an Inner West Council Arts and Culture grant. The grant is led by [https://socialsciences.uow.edu.au/ausccer/people/UOW243962.html Craig Lyons].
ABSTRACT: As urban renewal agendas are fortified in cities globally, ‘creativity’ – as contained within discourses of the creative industries, the Creative City and the creative economy – is circulated as the currency of secure post-industrial urban futures. Using the nexus between creativity and the urban as a starting point, the authors investigate how local enterprises visually communicate the urban in a neighbourhood that is characterized by the interface between manufacturing and creative industries. This research takes a fine-grained approach to the notion of creativity through an audit and qualitative analysis of the visual presentation, material attributes and semiotic meaning of street numbers. The authors do this by collecting data on and analysing how street numbers have been made, selected, used, replaced and layered in a contested industrial precinct in Australia’s largest city, Sydney. They contend that street numbers, as a ubiquitous technology within the city that is both operational and creative, are metonyms for what they understand to be urban. In arguing for vernacular readings of the city, they make use of a top-down, governmental mode of reading the city – the operational legibility of street numbering – as an intervention in current discourses of the urban and of creativity in the city.
Historically, it is one of the oldest sewage pumping stations still in active service in the Sydney Water system and is technologically unique in having the dual function of carrying sewage and stormwater. SP0271 is one of only two pumping stations which were originally powered by steam. The importance of the station is reinforced by the provision of a substantial house for the site engineer, which survives intact. Aesthetically, it is one of the finest examples of a large scale Federation period public utility building in Sydney, displaying a high level of excellence in its design, construction and craftsmanship. The existing chimney is significant in its own right, being an excellent example of a substantial stack constructed in ornamental brickwork which is also a local landmark. The station reveals information about early steam and diesel technologies and is significant as a representative example of a sewage pumping station which still fulfils its role over 100 years after its introduction, as originally designed and constructed albeit with mechanical and electrical upgrading.
You have a provocation to explore. A project to begin. A local problem to solve. A team of pro-active people to assemble. We have the space and a network of people to connect you with.

Frontyard is a space for research, imagining, problem-solving, doing & not doing, meeting, talking, and making time. There are 2 short-term (1-2 weeks) residency spaces for artists and non-artists, and an open door policy for hosting people in our workshop, garden and library if your project needs a place to grow after your residency ends.

In return for the space and time to think, Frontyard asks for a small gift of time from each resident. That could mean participating as a provocateur in a futuring session, giving a public talk, sharing skills via a workshop, symposium, film night, performance, or something else you think is important for the community.
== Practical Stuff ==

In each #getaroom

* Table, chair, shelves, working wall
* Access Hours - round the clock
* Public Access and Programs - Thursday to Sunday and Thursday night
* Internet - yes
* Sleeping over - no! (but if you are from out of town, we can help find you a bed)
* Other assets - workshop area, small kitchen, kitchen garden, library, hammocks, pro-active people!

=== How do I #getaroom? ===

We have a ‘no application’ policy, so as long as you are happy to sign our [https://wiki.frontyardprojects.org/everything/Frontyard_Memorandum_of_Understanding MoU] and we can find a time slot that suits, you’re in! We prefer to meet you face to face first, unless you are too far away to drop in. Come along to our monthly Open House (last Sunday of each month, from 1-3pm) or drop us an email to make time for a cuppa.

What we ask from you.

* Fill out our Google form so we have your contact details, and sign our [https://wiki.frontyardprojects.org/everything/Frontyard_Memorandum_of_Understanding MoU]
* book an induction with us via email or #slack 1 week before your residency starts
* Send us 1-2 sentences about what you’ll be working and an image, so we can put it on our website and Insta
* Upload images and text you want to share to our Flickr archive when you’re in residence
* Tell us when and what you want to do as a ‘gift of time’ for the Frontyard community - you don’t need to know before you start so no rush!

=== New resident digital access checklist ===
Make sure new residents have access to:
# The [[Slack|Frontyard Slack Channel]]
# An account for this wiki
# Add the residency to the list above

=== '''Frontyard Induction Checklist''' ===
''If you're up for drop-ins:''

Keep front fence gate open when you're there. Put A-frame out on the footpath up to the fence. Write a "come on in" message with whiteboard marker.

''If you don't want to be disturbed and are the only one there:''

Feel free to keep front gate closed. No pressure to open space up or have A-frame out.

Contact information:

We need to be able to contact you :) Grab a janitor and ifll in as much of this form as you can together.

http://is.gd/frontyard_resident_contactform

Vistors and guests:

Please invite friends to come ad use the space with you - no need to check with anyone, if you trust them, we trust them. Feel free to induct others, just make sure they sign the MOU. If you'd like to recommend people for residences, just put them in touch with the janitors frontyardprojects@gmail.com

Hammocks:

Enjoy! shake out and check for spiders before lounging though...

Bike:

We have one and a helmet. It is the Blue Miyata Valley runner inside the front porch. Combo lock is 0000.

Keycode box:

Please note, there is only one set of keys allowed for this property. Council has a copy, but we don't. One key opens the grate padlock and front door, the other opens the padlock on the back gate.

The wrought iron gate has been getting stuck lately, please be careful opening and closing it - it takes a little bit of muscle.

To open the keycode box - enter three button code XXX and open by compressing top latch. If you fumble or make a mistake you can clear the code by pressing the centre bottom down and re-enter the code.

Get keys out of the lockbox, open white wrought iron gate padlock and front door and put keys back in the box - enter three button code ''before'' replacing the box door by compressing top latch and anchoring bottom pin into box. Please do not force this shut. If there's an issue with the keys call Clare 0404217991 or Connie 0422901540.

Front double doors:

Both doors can be opened up. If you do this, please ensure you've put upper AND lower latches into the door frame as the door opens itself even if the handle latch has been shut.

Windows:

All interior windows have keyless latches. Most of these are opened top first. You'll work it out, but once again, please don't force them, they're old. A few are stubborn, please make a note in the logbook if there are any that you think might not open/close sometime soon!

Lights & power points:

Most are easy to find. Please make sure they're all turned off when you leave. Save electricity where possible - turn off powerpoints and please don't leave fans/heating on when you're not in the room.

Workshop & toilets:

If you use the front room please clear your stuff when you're done. 50+ people have access to this space to come and work. There are 2x lots of toilets at Frontyard, one is through the workshop, the other through Getaroom A includes a shower that is not currently usable due to broken tiles. Everyone can use all toilets. The workshop toilet is the most accessible.

Getaroom A & B:

If you are doing a residency - you've been assigned a room, please check that you're in the right one on the public calendar! Feel free to move tables and chairs, lamps and fans. You're welcome to have people over to share the space with you. '''When you've finished your residency, please wipe down chalkboards, vacuum the carpet and wipe down the desks for the next resident!''' A welcome note to the next person is a wonderful thing to consider...

Time trumpet/hallway:

Feel free to plot dates relating to your research or ideas here. We just ask that if you're going to wipe it clean get in touch with claire@gutstring.net and/or please take a photo of what was there before you wiped it!

Kissing booth (tool cupboard)

Pretty self-explanatory. If you use anything from here please put it back where you found it. If you use something up entirely (paint, glue etc) please

leave a note in the logbook for us to buy more, or, better still, replace it please.

Library:

Frontyard library is non-lending. You're very welcome to read in here as much as you like. You're also welcome to scan, photocopy, photograph anything you find in here, but please leave it on site.

If you'd like to be a booksitter - keeping the space open for people to come and read, please let us know and we'll give you access to the public calendar.

Kitchen & Garden:

We don't want to put up kitchen fairy signs. Please wash up after yourself and put stuff away where you found it. If you want to share food that you've in the fridge (eg salad or batch of homemade hummus...) please leave a note in the logbook. Please throw out any leftovers when you're leaving. If you're in residence and need a specific milk (eg rice, soy, almond) please let us know and we will sort it out.

Please harvest and eat as much of the garden as you like! Take some home, share with friends.

Please empty the kitchen garbage bin and compost/worm food DAILY - otherwise fruit flies and slimy creatures build up. The worm food/compost is the tall white tupperware container on the sink. There's a list on the tiles of what you can't put in there. Worm farm/compost is the black multi-storey farm next to the raised garden beds. While you're out there, feel free to turn the compost!

Please water the garden. Please fill up the porous clay pots in the two garden beds to the left. The tap for the hose is in the carpark around the back. Please water indoor plants with one of the many watering cans around the place.

Bins:

Please collect garbage from

- workshop bathroom

- check residency rooms

- kitchen white-coloured landfill bin

- kitchen re-cycling (often just to the side of landfill bin)

- green bin in the garden

Don't worry about emptying them if there's nothing offensive in there, or they're hardly full. We forget which week is which, so we put out all the bins out the back alley every Tuesday and bring them in Wednesday arvo. The key to the gate is in the keycode box.

We organised an event as part of the Inner West Open Studio Trail on March 18, 2018, to explore community visions for Marrickville 2028.
