== Frequently Asked Questions ==

=== Who has to pay? ===
An individual or group who is funded externally (e.g. through a grant) or operates on a for profit basis is asked to contribute towards our running costs at above rates.

An individual or group who collects fees from participants or from people attending an event or workshop is considered ‘for profit’. These rates are negotiable on a booking-by-booking basis, please talk to us about it. We want the space to be accessible for use, and also encourage people to support it.

Some for profit or funded projects pay a flat fee to rent to space. Another model, typically used with projects that aren't funded, but are selling things (for example a book launch by an independent publisher), we've negotiated for the donation to be a portion of sales. We're open to suggestions and value transparency and mutual aid.

Not for profit and free events are requested to alert attendees to Frontyard’s green donation box and funded-by-community model where our monthly bills and supporters are listed at the front entrance to the building. Suggested donation for attending an event at Frontyard is $10. Monthly bills can be supported through electronic transfer to our bank account.

=== Do I have to sign a contract or agreement? ===
Yes — an MOU will be sent to you via e-mail as confirmation of your booking. This document includes our terms and conditions of your booking and must be signed and returned to Frontyard before you commence your first booking. You will also need to arrange an induction to use Frontyard the first time around, please book a time with us over email in the week leading up to your event.

I need some time to set up for my class, do I need to consider this when I book the studio?

Yes — as the times you book indicate the moment you step into the building until the time you step out. This helps us make use of the shared spaces most efficiently.

=== How do I pay my contribution? ===
You will receive a letter asking for your contribution via e-mail that will have our EFT. You need to pay for the session at least 24 hours before the booking. We do not accept cash/cheque payments.

=== How do I get access? ===
On your first booking a Frontyard janitor or resident will open the facility and induct you into the space. Here they will issue you with a code for access to the space you book.

=== Do you have Internet access in your studios/workshop? ===
WiFi is available at no charge.

=== Other equipment available ===
We have 3 big tables, about 20 assorted chairs, 2 small gas heaters, projector (bring your own adaptors), small kitchen with 2-burner electric cooktop, glassware, cutlery and flatware, picnic blankets, cushions, edible garden, outdoor space, library.

The Janitors are in fact the board, or 'committee', responsible for Frontyard Projects Incorporated under its constitution.

Frontyard is organised around a series of working groups that cover the core activities and other projects, and by a committee known as the [[Janitors]] who are formally responsible for maintaining it.

Anyone is welcome to be involved in working groups and participate at frontyard. If you would like to get involved, joining a working group that suits your interests could be a good place to start. As we are slowly adjusting to this relatively new model, some working groups are more developed than others. If you would like to take up one of those below not yet active, get in touch.

Working groups don’t necessarily do all the work in a particular area – any special projects they take care of or initiate will usually be offered up for anyone to join in on. For example the Building Maintenance working group might make an audit of maintenance tasks needing to be done, and then do a call out for helpers or propose a working bee to get them happening.

Each working group has a person responsible for keeping it rolling along, whose job it is simply to propose the next meeting.

== Getaroom @ Frontyard ==

You have a provocation to explore. A project to begin. A local problem to solve. A team of pro-active people to assemble. We have the space and a network of people to connect you with.

Frontyard is a space for research, imagining, problem-solving, doing & not doing, meeting, talking, and making time. There are 2 short-term (1-2 weeks) residency spaces for artists and non-artists, and an open door policy for hosting people in our workshop, garden and library if your project needs a place to grow after your residency ends.

In return for the space and time to think, Frontyard asks for a small gift of time from each resident. That could mean participating as a provocateur in a futuring session, giving a public talk, sharing skills via a workshop, symposium, film night, performance, or something else you think is important for the community.

This wiki was hosted on a [https://www.digitalocean.com digital ocean] droplet - managed by [[Benjamin Forster]] on behalf of Frontyard. If you need to ssh into the server to access the actual files that make up the installation, you'll find the files at <code>/var/www/html/mediawiki</code>.

The installation was later moved to SL's server on Opal Stack (see the wiki).

This is a project to create a place where we can give some durable *visibility* and *accessibility* to the plans and activities that sustain and enliven [[frontyard]].

A number of us have described issues with a lack of transparency and accountability for the labour, energy and time that goes into reproducing frontyard week to week. There is also a difficulty is holding onto threads of projects, or in passing them on to one-another.

One idea for an intervention is to create a public place where tasks and activities of all different kinds can be logged and elaborated on. People can get a sense of who is doing what, what has happened in the past, and how things get done. We hope that important conversations can take foothold from these accounts of what happens.

A number of possible online tools were discussed, but we returned to the idea of the [[Wiki.frontyardprojects.org|fy wiki]], as an aspirational digital-yard of sorts. Directing more energy here has a number of flow on benefits in other kinds of documentation, sharing and elaborating that can happen.

The main idea is a page [[:Category:Projects]] that can host lists of projects, organised in different ways. [[:Category:Projects]] is a category page, which can have subcategories, like [[:Category:Active Projects]], opening up a lot of ways different people can organise these ideas.

We're hoping to improve the wifi signal across the building. Right now there is very limited signal, if any, in [[the Frontyard Library]].

One issue is that the NBN box got installed into the absolute corner of the building (south east corner of the workshop room), the farthest spot from the library. The Wifi router is currently next to the NBN box.

The wifi signal was good in there before when the router in Getaroom A.

If we buy a long ethernet cable, we could run that from the NBN box, attached to the wall, all the way to Getaroom A.

You have a provocation to explore. A project to begin. A local problem to solve. A team of pro-active people to assemble. We have the space and a network of people to connect you with.

Frontyard is a space for research, imagining, problem-solving, doing & not doing, meeting, talking, and making time. There are 2 short-term (1-2 weeks) residency spaces for artists and non-artists, and an open door policy for hosting people in our workshop, garden and library if your project needs a place to grow after your residency ends.

In return for the space and time to think, Frontyard asks for a small gift of time from each resident. That could mean participating as a provocateur in a futuring session, giving a public talk, sharing skills via a workshop, symposium, film night, performance, or something else you think is important for the community.

We have a ‘no application’ policy, so as long as you are happy to sign our [https://wiki.frontyardprojects.org/everything/Frontyard_Memorandum_of_Understanding MoU] and we can find a time slot that suits, you’re in! We prefer to meet you face to face first, unless you are too far away to drop in. Come along to our monthly Open House (last Sunday of each month, from 1-3pm) or drop us an email to make time for a cuppa.

Bike:

We have one and a helmet. It is the Blue Miyata Valley runner inside the front porch. Combo lock is 0000.

Keycode box:

Please note, there is only one set of keys allowed for this property. Council has a copy, but we don't. One key opens the grate padlock and front door, the other opens the padlock on the back gate.

The wrought iron gate has been getting stuck lately, please be careful opening and closing it - it takes a little bit of muscle.

To open the keycode box - enter three button code XXX and open by compressing top latch. If you fumble or make a mistake you can clear the code by pressing the centre bottom down and re-enter the code.

Get keys out of the lockbox, open white wrought iron gate padlock and front door and put keys back in the box - enter three button code ''before'' replacing the box door by compressing top latch and anchoring bottom pin into box. Please do not force this shut. If there's an issue with the keys call Clare 0404217991 or Connie 0422901540.

Front double doors:

Both doors can be opened up. If you do this, please ensure you've put upper AND lower latches into the door frame as the door opens itself even if the handle latch has been shut.

Windows:

All interior windows have keyless latches. Most of these are opened top first. You'll work it out, but once again, please don't force them, they're old. A few are stubborn, please make a note in the logbook if there are any that you think might not open/close sometime soon!

Lights & power points:

Most are easy to find. Please make sure they're all turned off when you leave. Save electricity where possible - turn off powerpoints and please don't leave fans/heating on when you're not in the room.

Workshop & toilets:

If you use the front room please clear your stuff when you're done. 50+ people have access to this space to come and work. There are 2x lots of toilets at Frontyard, one is through the workshop, the other through Getaroom A includes a shower that is not currently usable due to broken tiles. Everyone can use all toilets. The workshop toilet is the most accessible.

Getaroom A & B:

If you are doing a residency - you've been assigned a room, please check that you're in the right one on the public calendar! Feel free to move tables and chairs, lamps and fans. You're welcome to have people over to share the space with you. '''When you've finished your residency, please wipe down chalkboards, vacuum the carpet and wipe down the desks for the next resident!''' A welcome note to the next person is a wonderful thing to consider...

Time trumpet/hallway:

Feel free to plot dates relating to your research or ideas here. We just ask that if you're going to wipe it clean get in touch with claire@gutstring.net and/or please take a photo of what was there before you wiped it!

Kissing booth (tool cupboard)

Pretty self-explanatory. If you use anything from here please put it back where you found it. If you use something up entirely (paint, glue etc) please

leave a note in the logbook for us to buy more, or, better still, replace it please.

Library:

Frontyard library is non-lending. You're very welcome to read in here as much as you like. You're also welcome to scan, photocopy, photograph anything you find in here, but please leave it on site.

If you'd like to be a booksitter - keeping the space open for people to come and read, please let us know and we'll give you access to the public calendar.

Kitchen & Garden:

We don't want to put up kitchen fairy signs. Please wash up after yourself and put stuff away where you found it. If you want to share food that you've in the fridge (eg salad or batch of homemade hummus...) please leave a note in the logbook. Please throw out any leftovers when you're leaving. If you're in residence and need a specific milk (eg rice, soy, almond) please let us know and we will sort it out.

Please harvest and eat as much of the garden as you like! Take some home, share with friends.

Please empty the kitchen garbage bin and compost/worm food DAILY - otherwise fruit flies and slimy creatures build up. The worm food/compost is the tall white tupperware container on the sink. There's a list on the tiles of what you can't put in there. Worm farm/compost is the black multi-storey farm next to the raised garden beds. While you're out there, feel free to turn the compost!

Please water the garden. Please fill up the porous clay pots in the two garden beds to the left. The tap for the hose is in the carpark around the back. Please water indoor plants with one of the many watering cans around the place.

Bins:

Please collect garbage from

- workshop bathroom

- check residency rooms

- kitchen white-coloured landfill bin

- kitchen re-cycling (often just to the side of landfill bin)

- green bin in the garden

Don't worry about emptying them if there's nothing offensive in there, or they're hardly full. We forget which week is which, so we put out all the bins out the back alley every Tuesday and bring them in Wednesday arvo. The key to the gate is in the keycode box.

Improve the wifi in the Library by moving the router into Getaroom A

We're hoping to improve the wifi signal across the building. Right now there is very limited signal, if any, in [[the Frontyard Library]].

One issue is that the NBN box got installed into the absolute corner of the building (south east corner of the workshop room), the farthest spot from the library. The Wifi router is currently next to the NBN box.

The wifi signal was good in there before when the router in Getaroom A.

If we buy a long ethernet cable, we could run that from the NBN box, attached to the wall, all the way to Getaroom A.

Frontyard is organised around a series of working groups that cover the core activities and other projects, and by a committee known as the [[Janitors]] who are formally responsible for maintaining it.

Anyone is welcome to be involved in working groups and participate at frontyard. If you would like to get involved, joining a working group that suits your interests could be a good place to start. As we are slowly adjusting to this relatively new model, some working groups are more developed than others. If you would like to take up one of those below not yet active, get in touch.

Working groups don’t necessarily do all the work in a particular area – any special projects they take care of or initiate will usually be offered up for anyone to join in on. For example the Building Maintenance working group might make an audit of maintenance tasks needing to be done, and then do a call out for helpers or propose a working bee to get them happening.

Each working group has a person responsible for keeping it rolling along, whose job it is simply to propose the next meeting.

We acknowledge that Frontyard meets on Aboriginal land: the Cadigal Wangal people of the Eora are the traditional custodians of the land. We pay our respects to elders past, present and future.

== The Vibe ==
Frontyard Projects Inc. (hereafter referred to as “Frontyard”) is a network of people that provides a pro-active, flexible space for practical skills-sharing, futuring, and critical research. We aim to be community-led in terms of content and usefulness, open and questioning of current systems and structures, and respectful and trusting of our fellow Frontyarders.

The projects and research we’re interested in:

- contributing to our neighbourhoods

- agitating, facilitating, and nurturing collaborations between people

- working towards a more resilient, independent community

- creating, articulating and generating possible futures

By spending time at Frontyard or making use of its physical or digital assets, you are committing to maintain “The Vibe” and caretake the space in a respectful way that makes others sharing it with you feel safe. We want to create a community where people are free to be themselves without judgement or discrimination, regardless of sexuality, age, ethnicity or ability. Spaces are not safe simply because we designate them as such – it requires the combined efforts of us all. There are going to be times when each of us make mistakes. These mistakes are opportunities to learn from each other, and grow as individuals and as a community.

- Respect the physical and emotional boundaries of others

- Respect everyone’s right to live without intimidation, harassment, or discrimination

Frontyard’s monthly open house events are where conversation takes place with the community. These events are on between 1pm and 3pm on the last Sunday of each month. If you are a resident at Frontyard and one of the open house afternoons are on during your residency period, it would be appreciated if you could be there, or let us know if you can’t.

== Access ==
Frontyard operates on a lock box system. There is only one set of keys, so keys must be put back in the box *immediately* after opening or closing the building. If you lose the keys, the cost of locksmith callouts and registered key cuttings must be reimbursed to Frontyard. It is your responsibility to close all windows, wash up, empty garbage and compost, and lock up before leaving. Frontyard may decide for security reasons to change the lockbox combination at any time. In this case, all current residents will be notified immediately and past residents will need to request the new code for continued access.

Access hours are round the clock, but sleeping/camping on premises is not permitted. If you are at Frontyard at night and alone, please keep doors locked and familiarise yourself with the emergency numbers posted next to the front door. If there are any incidents or things that make you feel unsafe, please record these in the logbook so they can be addressed.

General cleanliness is your responsibility. Bins should be put out in the back lane EVERY TUESDAY and brought in after emptying on Wednesday. All dishes should be washed up before leaving the premises each day, tables wiped down, kitchen compost emptied and rinsed out with no food scraps left to attract bugs and critters. If you have used the workshop, it should be returned to its initial condition at the conclusion of your event, SAME DAY. Vacuums, brooms, and dustpans are provided. All personal gear must be removed at the conclusion of your residency or event — Frontyard will not store materials on site without prior agreement.

Our kitchen garden reflects the health and vibrancy of our residencies and public programs, so please water if the soil is dry, top up irrigation pots, pull weeds and prune as needed. And please EAT from the garden as you wish.

Frontyard has high speed ADSL internet, which you will be given access to upon registering your contact details with Frontyard.

== Governance ==
Frontyard is not-just-artist-run initiative that has been established as an incorporated association with a large management board (“The Janitors”), 4 office bearers (Chair, Deputy Chair, Treasurer, Secretary) and a Public Officer. We also have a large community (the people that use the physical space at 228 Illawarra Road Marrickville), who can direct what activities happen at Frontyard. We aim for radical transparency in all operations and dealings with the community, and all work is shared equally in return for an equal, open and honest voice in directing the organisation’s aims and activities.

The Janitors maintain the funding, operational systems, and reporting structures of the organisation and develop the strategies for long term financial/organisational sustainability and critical relevance in consultation with our community. Operational decisions are made by The Janitors through discussion during monthly Board meetings; decisions can also be made outside of these meetings through day-to-day interactions with our community on a “common sense” basis. This often happens on #Slack.

Frontyard does not apply for operational or program grants. There are no paid staff. All bills are covered by members of the community chipping in funds and time on a month-to-month basis. Our website home page has our financial history and current financial position, which is updated monthly.

== Communication, Information Sharing, & Consultation ==
We primarily communicate face-to-face over a cuppa and digitally on [[Slack]], and we try and keep all conversations and channels public and open to the Frontyard community. Frontyard is organised by the community and promotion of residencies and events is a shared responsibility between the event organisers and the Frontyard janitors. Public events will be listed on the Frontyard website under EVENTS and where appropriate a Facebook event you make can be shared on our page upon request. The community is responsible for generating its own imagery and written content to promote the events they host. Frontyard is responsible for making sure those events are made accessible via its chosen channels. Your event is your responsibility, the Frontyard janitors do not automatically attend all/any events, but should you need a local on site for a particular reason, please let us know at least 1 week before the event so that we can organise help.

Frontyard has high speed ADSL internet, which you will be given access to upon registering your contact details with Frontyard.
The local electronic library “A Library” is an open network and digital library which you can contribute to if you scan library holdings or wish to add any texts to the archive.

== Governance ==
Frontyard is not-just-artist-run initiative that has been established as an incorporated association with a large management board (“The Janitors”), 4 office bearers (Chair, Deputy Chair, Treasurer, Secretary) and a Public Officer. We also have a large community (the people that use the physical space at 228 Illawarra Road Marrickville), who can direct what activities happen at Frontyard. We aim for radical transparency in all operations and dealings with the community, and all work is shared equally in return for an equal, open and honest voice in directing the organisation’s aims and activities.

The Janitors maintain the funding, operational systems, and reporting structures of the organisation and develop the strategies for long term financial/organisational sustainability and critical relevance in consultation with our community. Operational decisions are made by The Janitors through discussion during monthly Board meetings; decisions can also be made outside of these meetings through day-to-day interactions with our community on a “common sense” basis. This often happens on #Slack.

Frontyard does not apply for operational or program grants. There are no paid staff. All bills are covered by members of the community chipping in funds and time on a month-to-month basis. Our website home page has our financial history and current financial position, which is updated monthly.

== Communication, Information Sharing, & Consultation ==
We primarily communicate face-to-face over a cuppa and digitally on [[Slack]], and we try and keep all conversations and channels public and open to the Frontyard community. Generally the quickest way to find out about what's happening at Frontyard is via our website at http://www.frontyardprojects.org. The best way to get in touch with a Janitor or community of Frontyarders is via our [[Slack| Slack channels]].

All official communications are in writing, usually in email form. Please allow a few days for people to respond via email, as we are all volunteers and the Janitors share this responsibility.

All residency and event bookings must be added to our public calendar before they are considered “confirmed” and contacts and information added to our live archive. Any one of The Janitors can book events on the public calendar. Please do not promote any events until they are confirmed.

== Conflict Resolution ==
In the event of a dispute between community members and/or The Janitors, an attempt at mediation will be made by a third party who all parties agree can act as mediator. If that dispute cannot be resolved through mediation, the Office Bearers will make a final decision.

== Authorisation ==
The signing of the Emergency Contact Form (see first paragraph of this page) acts as an acknowledgment of the above MoU. It is not a formal undertaking, but it is made in the hope that the community will strive to reach the objectives stated in the MoU, to the best of their ability.
