Food

Marrickville Pork Roll 236 Illawarra Rd (2-minute walk)

Super great value, legendary pork roll banh mi; they do a vegetarian one also. You can ask for a wholemeal bun (at no extra charge) or to add tofu (for a small fee), and they will always ask, “with chilli or no chilli?” There’s often a huge line but it moves quickly, and they are so popular there’s even another location at the other end of Illawarra Road. Yummy rice paper rolls too.

Pho Phd 228 Illawarra Rd (3-minute walk)

Only does lunch Fri-Sun, other nights it is strictly dinner.

Hello Auntie 278 Illawarra Rd (4-minute walk)

There are lots of pho places, it’s pretty easy to tell the good from the bad as the restaurants are either completely packed or empty.

Alex 'N' Rolls 321 Illawarra Rd (6-minute walk)

Small operation - Big Flavour! This tiny operation serves some of the best Vietnamese food out of the window of an unsuspecting house. Despite the name, they are not currently making rolls, but the rice and noodle dishes are outstanding. Hours vary depending on the day, and they close when they're out of food. To see if they're open, check the Is “ALEX ‘N’ ROLLS open?!?! Facebook page here.

Food and beer

The Marrickville Hotel 244 Illawarra Rd (4-minute walk)

Good place to meet somebody or a group of people on a weekday early afternoon / evening. They only do bar snacks but they can arrange to have Pho Phd delivered there.

The Henson Park Hotel 91 Illawarra Rd (9-minute walk)

Great pub food and beer, community-oriented, pokie-free and has a room full of pinball machines

Philter 92-98 Sydenham Rd (10-minute walk)

Brewery with bar snacks and bar food (burgers, pizza, fried things) plus an upstairs rooftop cocktail bar called ‘Marrickville Springs’

The Bob Hawke Beer & Leisure Centre / Hawke's Brewing 8-12 Sydney St (11-minute walk)

brewery and a giant Chinese restaurant done up like an old 80s suburban Chinese restaurant called The Lucky Prawn

Mixtape 142A Victoria Rd. (13-minute walk)

great beers and some food as well, pizza and stuff

The Grifter 228 Illawarra Rd (19-minute walk)

A bit further to walk but a nice place to finish the day with a beer (they don’t really have any food but sometimes have food trucks); great beer by some great folks who also run Passport Skateboard who have a gallery in Darlinghurst
